What Does a ‘Beam Photo’ Look Like?

A ‘beam shot’ (photo) can be broken into several distinct regions.  Each of these regions represents part of the total light output from the torch.

 Beam Shot

In the picture (right) you can see there is a bright spot in the centre referred to as the ‘Hotspot’, with a slightly dimmer ring surrounding it this is the ‘Corona’ finally there is a dinner area around that; this is referred to as the light ‘Spill’.

The efficiency of the torch is determined by how much light in contained in the Hotspot + Corona; the spill is not generally considered.  However, for night diving ‘Spill’ is desirable as it gives an awareness of the surrounding environment.
