What Does ‘Throw’ Mean?

 

“Throw” means how far the torch beam will travel; or the farthest object the torch will light up.  Torches are considered either a ‘thrower’ or ‘flood’.

 Thrower Vs Flood

For divers primarily using a torch for night diving, they may prefer it to be more ‘Flood’ as it gives a better overall illumination of the environment.  Whereas a wreck/cave diver would prefer a ‘Thrower’ as it would give more penetrating power to illuminate objects in poor visibility.

 

Light from the torch will reduce in brightness as it travels farther; this is commonly known as the inverse square law.  Here is an example:
