What are ‘Lithium Ion Batteries’?

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) is the type of chemistry the battery uses to store its change there are many different types.

Lithium Ion BatteryThe common disposable battery uses ‘Alkaline’ while your car battery uses ‘Lead acid’.  The advantage of Lithium Ion batteries is they are rechargeable and they have a high ‘energy density’ (which means they can store a lot of energy).

They also do not suffer from ‘memory effect’, which is where the battery capacity reduces over a period, like Nickel Cadmium batteries have.

However, it is not all roses… charging Lithium Ion batteries forms deposits internally which reduces the batteries capacity and ability to deliver power.  The typical number of recharges a Lithium Ion battery can take is 500.
